Key responsibilities

  • Review, negotiate, and draft contracts related to trading transactions, including physical and financial purchase and sale agreements, offtake agreements, marketing agreements, master agreements, Storage and transportation agreements.
  • Negotiate resolution of claims associated with trading and shipping contracts and support litigation efforts as required if the matter is escalated.
  • Provide advice and training on compliance and risk exposure under relevant laws and regulations relating to oil trading and shipping, including:  competition law, market manipulation rules, international trade, import/export rules, anti-corruption laws, corporate governance, anti-boycott and sanctioned parties and internal tax/legal policies.
  • Review, negotiate, and draft shipping-related contracts including but not limited to voyage charter parties, time charter parties, and manage disputes when they arise.
  • Provide advice and guidance to, and collaborate with, lawyers in other business units (in Singapore as well as other jurisdictions/time zones), ensuring maximum effective use of in-house legal resources.
  • Provide advice to other support functional teams such as Compliance, Finance, Contracts, Tax, Credit, and Public Affairs in the supply and trading, and shipping context.
  • International travel will occasionally be required.

Role requirements

  • Lawyer qualified to practice in Singapore or UK.  Dual qualification preferred.
  • At least 7 years of experience working for commodities or energy space (Soft commodities, Oil & Gas trading companies. Experience in shipping law (including chartering and dispute management) and/or carbon trading would be a plus.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to respond quickly and decisively to client needs in a rapidly changing and fast-paced highly competitive trading environment, while always emphasizing compliance with all applicable laws and internal policies and guidelines.
  • Ability to effectively manage a high volume of complex and diverse matters concurrently, provide support and advice to multiple commercial and stakeholder teams, and manage conflicting and evolving work demands.
