Chief Content Officer

Our client is one of Malaysia’s most established and influential integrated media and entertainment groups, with a significant footprint across television, streaming, digital, audio and content production. With a large and diverse audience base and deep local content capabilities, the business is entering an important phase of transformation as consumption shifts rapidly towards OTT, social, short-form and creator-led ecosystems.

As part of this evolution, they are searching for a Chief Content Officer to modernise the content organisation, strengthen original local IP and build a more digital-native, multi-platform and commercially driven content ecosystem.

This role is based in Malaysia and is open to Malaysian and regional/international candidates who are willing to relocate to Malaysia.

Key responsibilities

As the Chief Content Officer, you will set and execute the overall content strategy across television, OTT, digital, radio and social. You will lead large-scale content development, commissioning, acquisition and production teams, combining creative judgement with commercial and operational leadership to drive audience growth, relevance and monetisation.

  • Set and execute an integrated content strategy aligned with organisational growth, audience engagement, brand relevance and ROI objectives.
  • Lead the transformation from a predominantly broadcast-led model into a digital-first, multi-platform ecosystem spanning TV, OTT, digital, social, audio and emerging formats.
  • Oversee content development, commissioning, acquisition, production and portfolio planning across multiple genres, languages and audience segments.
  • Raise the quality and distinctiveness of original content while developing scalable local IP, franchises, formats and talent that can travel across platforms.
  • Build strategic relationships with creators, showrunners, studios, production houses, platforms, distributors and rights owners across Malaysia, Southeast Asia and internationally.
  • Lead complex content partnerships, co-productions, licensing and acquisition negotiations to secure strategic value, rights and IP.
  • Drive monetisation across SVOD, AVOD, advertising, sponsorship, branded content, bundling, distribution, licensing and other commercial ecosystems.
  • Use audience insights, data and personalisation technologies to strengthen content planning, commissioning, curation and investment decisions.
  • Develop social, short-form and creator-led ecosystems to deepen engagement with younger and digitally native audiences.
  • Partner closely with product, technology, commercial and marketing teams to improve content discovery, distribution, audience conversion and platform performance.
  • Build, inspire and retain high-performing creative, production, acquisition and content teams, combining creative ambition with accountability and speed of execution.
  • Ensure content decisions reflect commercial, legal and regulatory requirements, while leading reputational or regulatory issues with sound judgement and strong stakeholder management.

Role requirements

  • Extensive senior leadership experience within content, broadcast, streaming, OTT, studios, production or digital media.
  • Proven ability to set and execute content strategy at scale and lead transformation through significant shifts in technology, distribution and consumer behaviour.
  • Strong expertise across content development, commissioning, acquisition, production and monetisation, with a deep understanding of OTT, SVOD and AVOD models.
  • A strong track record in developing original content, formats, franchises, IP and/or talent with demonstrable audience and commercial impact.
  • Experience navigating complex content partnerships, co-productions, licensing arrangements, rights negotiations and ecosystem partnerships.
  • Strong commercial acumen, including an understanding of content economics, investment decisions, audience data and ROI.
  • Proven ability to build and lead large, high-performing creative and production teams while collaborating with commercial, product and technology functions.
  • A deep understanding of Malaysian and Southeast Asian audience behaviour, particularly Malay and vernacular audiences, would be highly advantageous.
  • A strong network across Malaysia and Southeast Asia’s media, entertainment, production, creator and regulatory ecosystem would be an advantage.
  • Excellent stakeholder management, communication and influencing skills, with the confidence to operate at senior executive and enterprise level.
