Chief Strategy Officer

The Chief Strategy Officer will report into Chief Executive Officer of Malaysia, with dotted responsibilities into the APAC Chief Strategy Officer. The agencies respective strategy lead will be dotted line reporting into the Chief Strategy Officer. This role is an executive leadership role and plays a pivotal position in leading the growth of strategy delivery, product development marketing function of entire group network in Malaysia.

This role will drive strategic planning capabilities and solutions critical in elevating the group’s shift beyond media agency into business partner whilst growing new revenue stream through consultation-led projects or products. This role will be anchored in elevating the group’s stature in the market, through distinct, clear and ownable positioning via robust marketing plan.

The role will oversee related brand agencies strategy function working closely with agency leadership and business leads in ensuring strong delivery of strategy and creative work to clients. This is a high profile and high visibility position within the organization and the media industry, where the individual must have the leadership seniority in dealings with senior management stakeholders within the organization network as well as external stakeholders such as clients and media partners.

This role will work with multiple stakeholders across markets and the individual must be comfortable with a fast-pace and constant changing landscape of marketing business, and can proactively problem solve, influence and nurture others, make things happen and senior stakeholder management.

Key responsibilities

  • Strategic Planning Leadership:
    • Build strong strategic planning foundations across the group, building solid strategy community.
    • Drive and elevate expectations on work delivery to ensure strong elements of strategic planning and media strategy, keeping the distinctiveness within each agency.
    • Quality control on all planning and strategy product with appropriate review and sign-off protocol especially on key clients and key projects; ensuring work achieves high level of strategy and creative thinking that is award-worthy.
    • Work with team leads and strategy leads on key clients’ delivery.
    • Executive strategy lead on key business pitches. Responsible in driving the success of the pitch delivery.
    • Work with APAC and global Strategy community to drive Malaysia’s strategic planning growth, recognition within the network.
  • Product Development & Deployment Leadership:
    • Lead and land planning frameworks and systems within agency; ensuring 80% – 100% adoptions of frameworks and systems used, demonstrated, and delivered consistently to our clients.
    • Train and nurture usage, building champions within team and within agencies.
    • Deliver a solution to seamlessly integrate audiences as part of wider campaign or brand strategy deck (balancing from broad vs. custom audience approach).
    • Track system usage across agencies and ensure consistent growth in adoption.
    • Build case studies/testimonials from clients on success demonstration or usage and impact of tools, systems and frameworks.
    • Champion Investment Planner and any other strategic product solutions to find opportunities for monetization.
    • Build a quarterly thought leadership and initiative that positions the group as thought leaders and increase share of industry presence. Ensure maintain distinctiveness of each agency group.
    • Develop new product solutions/frameworks to address key clients’ queries.
    • Build presence as CSO for the group in industry events, by increasing contribution in opinion pieces, quotes from interview and speaking engagements in industry events.
  • Agency Marketing Leadership:
    • Work with agency leadership to drive marketing agenda through various initiatives leveraging global, regional support where necessary. Map clear agency marketing initiatives and plan with agency leadership; and support to land the plan.
    • Leader of total Award strategy and planning. Develop clear award strategy and plans, and work with agency teams to land the plan. Build best practices in award-writing techniques, training, and award case video production to elevate win rate.
    • Increase agencies presence in industry events via participation, speaking engagements and opinion pieces contribution.
  • Key KPIs:
    • Elevation of strategic delivery from basic media strategy to robust business strategy solutions.
    • Deliver on adoption of the group’s thinking and systems; demonstrated through delivery in plans and evidenced in improved agency satisfaction by key clients or clients’ positive testimonials.
    • Increase conversion of new business.
    • Reinvigorate the agencies award presence, wins vs. 2021. Aim to win Grand Prix Agency of the Year in 2023.
    • Grow strategic led revenue yoy.
    • Increased SOV and PR coverage in the market in 2022/2023.

Role requirements

  • Minimum 15+ years of solid strategy experience with outstanding results.
  • Ability to pivot between business strategy to communication and media and vice versa.
  • Demonstrate wide array of knowledge in various aspects.
  • Able to formulate a good clear narrative, opinion, and argument on topic.
  • Confident presenter with clear and articulate marketplace understanding.
  • Leadership ability in influencing across senior stakeholders; and ability to cohesively collaborate and motivate others for actions.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and get the best out of team resources.
  • Deliver against business goals and agreements.
