Financial Controller

The Finance Controller will be responsible for overseeing the financial operations of the company, ensuring the integrity of financial data, and implementing financial controls and reporting mechanisms. This role involves managing accounting processes, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and ensuring compliance with financial regulations and standards.

Key responsibilities

  • Financial Management & Reporting
    • Oversee day-to-day finance operations including general ledger, AP/AR, payroll, and cash flow
    • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual management accounts and financial reports
    • Ensure compliance with MFRS, Companies Act 2016, and relevant Bursa/SSM requirements (if applicable)
    • Manage budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes
    • Lead year-end audits and liaise with external auditors, tax agents, and company secretaries
  • Intellectual Property (IP) & Intangible Assets
    • Manage accounting for IP and other intangible assets, including capitalisation, amortisation, impairment, and disposals
    • Track development costs related to IP in compliance with applicable accounting standards
    • Support IP valuation, licensing arrangements, and commercialisation activities
    • Work closely with legal, R&D, and commercial teams on IP-related financial matters
    • Support due diligence for IP-related transactions, acquisitions, or restructuring
  • Tax, Compliance & Risk
    • Ensure compliance with Malaysian tax regulations, including corporate tax, SST/GST (if applicable), and withholding tax
    • Support R&D tax incentives and grants (e.g. related to innovation or IP development)
    • Maintain robust internal controls and risk management processes
    • Ensure compliance with transfer pricing requirements where IP is held or licensed cross-border
  • Leadership & Stakeholder Management
    • Lead and develop the finance team
    • Act as a business partner to senior management, providing financial insights and recommendations
    • Prepare financial information for board, investors, or regional/global stakeholders

Role requirements

Essential

  • Professionally qualified accountant (ACCA / CPA / CIMA / ICAEW or equivalent)
  • Minimum 7–10 years relevant finance experience, including a Financial Controller or senior finance role
  • Solid experience in IP or intangible asset accounting
  • Strong knowledge of MFRS and Malaysian statutory and tax requirements
  • Hands-on experience with ERP/financial systems and advanced Excel

 

Desirable

  • Experience in IP-intensive industries (technology, software, life sciences, media, R&D)
  • Exposure to IP valuation, licensing, or transfer pricing
  • Experience working with regional or multinational structures
