Senior Legal VP Front Office

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced derivatives lawyer/negotiator to support our Wholesale Global Markets business, which includes Fixed Income, Equity, and Prime Services. This role is based in Mumbai and will report directly to the Legal Department.

Key responsibilities

  • Legal Advisory & Support: Provide expert legal advice and support to the India business on derivatives transactions and master agreements.
  • Drafting & Negotiation: Draft, negotiate, and manage the execution of master agreements for market products, including OTC derivatives and repos (e.g., ISDA Master Agreements, CSAs, GMRAs, etc.).
  • Risk Control: Ensure robust legal risk management and strict adherence to the firm’s policies and guidelines.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Advise on and support the implementation of both India-specific and global regulatory changes, assessing their impact on derivatives and other relevant market products.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Regularly consult and coordinate with internal teams across local, regional, and global levels (e.g., Risk Management, Finance, Operations, Legal, Compliance) to ensure seamless business operations.
  • Knowledge Sharing: Collaborate with Legal and Compliance colleagues across various regions to share knowledge, address common legal issues, and ensure consistency in approach.
  • External Counsel Management: Engage and manage external legal counsel when necessary, ensuring quality and cost-effective legal services.
  • Bespoke Transactions & Projects: Handle complex, bespoke transactions and lead special projects as required.
  • Regulatory Coordination: Interface with regulators and participate in industry forums to stay informed of regulatory changes and industry best practices.

Role requirements

  • Experience: At least 10 years of experience as a derivatives lawyer / negotiator, with a strong preference for experience within the Indian regulatory environment concerning market products.
  • Regulatory Expertise: Extensive knowledge of Indian regulatory frameworks as they relate to market products and derivatives.
  • Project Management: Proven ability to manage stand-alone projects with minimal supervision.
  • Technical Skills: Expertise in template development, as well as familiarity with relevant software and systems.
  • Collaboration: Experience in working with offshore teams and third-party service providers.
  • Work Ethic: Strong work ethic with the ability to thrive in a time-sensitive environment.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively across all levels of the organization.
  • Legal Practice: Prior experience in legal private practice or as in-house counsel within an investment bank is highly desirable.
  • Organizational Skills: Strong organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously.
