Snr Manager (Legal & Compliance) – 70% Compliance

The Compliance Counsel will be responsible for the strategic development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the organization’s Ethics & Compliance program.

The position may also be expected to provide legal support on various matters related to the company’s global business operations, particularly within the shipping sector in APAC, monitoring the legal developments and changes in legislation.

Key responsibilities

Compliance and Ethics Function:

  • Build a highly effective Compliance and Ethics function to ensure compliance with the company policy and regulatory obligations.
  • Ensure adherence to the organization’s policies and Code of Conduct and Business Ethics.
  • Expertise in ISO 37001 Anti-Bribery Management System, internal and external audits, anti-bribery and corruption, conflict of interest, gifts and hospitality, whistleblowing, and due diligence systems.
  • Experience with global sanctions (OFAC, OFSI, US, UK, EU, UN, sanctions relating to Russia and China) and maritime sector sanctions, including ship-to-ship transfers etc.
  • Knowledge of global data protection laws (GDPR, UK GDPR, Singapore PDPA, Brazil LGPD).

 

Systems and Processes:

  • Lead and manage the establishment and implementation of compliance systems, processes, and tools to mitigate illegal, unethical, or improper conduct.
  • Provide structured guidance and monitoring to support compliance.

 

Communication and Training:

  • Design, implement, and maintain an effective compliance education, communication, and training program for the organization.
  • Foster awareness and understanding of compliance standards across all levels.

 

Risk Assessment:

  • Lead and manage risk assessments and corporate compliance reviews to ensure the effectiveness and efficiency of compliance systems, policies, manuals, and guidelines.

 

Research and Benchmarking:

  • Oversee compliance and ethics obligations in all business locations, ensuring that appropriate structures are in place to meet legal and regulatory requirements.

 

Legal Matters (Secondary role):

  • Negotiate, structure, draft, and finalize contracts.
  • Advise on and manage both contentious and non-contentious legal matters.
  • Conduct legal and compliance research as required.
  • Be prepared to manage Crisis. Management responsibilities as needed.

Role requirements

  • Ideally, you are a dual qualified lawyer, with approximately 8 years of extensive experience in corporate compliance, ethics, and legal functions, ideally in global maritime or related sectors.
  • Strong knowledge of international compliance regulations, including sanctions, anti-bribery laws, and data protection.
  • Proven track record in risk management, compliance system implementation, and training development.
  • Legal expertise with the ability to advise on various matters affecting global business operations.
